WRITING FROM MEDITATION:
EXPLORING BODY AND BREATH AS CREATIVE INSPIRATION

What wisdom breathes in the body? What does the body know? This four-week contemplative writing series integrates guided mindfulness meditations with generative writing inquiries to access embodied knowledge and to inspire creative writing. Together, we will explore how the process of writing can help to reveal and realize the creative potential of body and mind.

Our creative explorations will be grounded in body and breath awareness meditations, preparing us for embodied writing, reading, and listening. We'll write in response to and in relationship to our own sensory experiences, memories, observations, and insights. We'll read inspiring embodied writing and consider how such writing may invite participatory exchange between writers and readers. Through embodied listening, we'll extend our meditative focus to the words and ideas of the writers in our classroom, supporting and celebrating each writer's creative process, and pursuing new connections through writing and thinking together.

No previous meditation experience is needed to fully participate in this series.

POEM-LETTERS & ESSAY-LETTERS:
WRITING CREATIVE, COLLABORATIVE CORRESPONDENCE

This workshop will explore the creative process and collaborative possibilities of poetic and lyrical personal letter-writing. Drawing inspiration from "Envelopes of Air," a poem-letter correspondence between Natalie Diaz and Ada Limón, we'll engage with generative, embodied, meditative writing prompts intended to draw forth meaningful experiences and insights from each writer's life and mind on to the page. During the workshop, we'll explore techniques for writing from our breathing, sensing bodies, attuned to the living world around us, and invite connection, tenderness, and compassion by writing and thinking in response to one another through collaborative, creative correspondence. Participants will have the opportunity to enjoy an epistolary exchange with a workshop peer during the session, and to craft a poem-letter or essay-letter to a recipient of their choosing.
